  The main thrust of the project is to compare site-specific and field-average management systems. Each management plan is put together using best management practices for the area. The site-specific systems incorporate variable-rate inputs based on grid sampling and GPS-linked scouting, with practices and rates adjusted according to the variability measured in the field. Using a sophisticated design, small plots throughout the fields will allow the statistical comparison of the two management systems on agronomic, economic, and environmental performance and suitability.

  • Search tools:
• Apart from the indices above you can access any of the many word searching tools such as Alta Vista's advanced search, but make liberal use of AND, NEAR, with OR in brackets. Further, limiting searches to titles or URL's can help narrow your search. Their help page explains all of this. Ultimately you need to develop some search engine "savvy". Searching for words such as "orange" AND "soil" will dig up hundreds if not thousands of pages with both words in them, most being totally irrelevant to agriculture.

• The Horticultural Web HomePage is a good start.
• The New Zealand HortResearch Server, offers limited information on its HortNET Demo Page. You have to become a subscriber to get the full load.
• Another site I have used several times is Global Agribusiness Information Network which has good subtropical fruit information, and is strong in the postharvest treatment and marketing areas.

• California Avocado Commission has a large site with lots of information from recipes to postharvest handling techniques for the trade.
• The US Irradiation site offers important information for those looking at breaking into this field.
